James Kuffner, renowned roboticist and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University fascinated the record-setting A3 Business Forum audience in early Feburary with a discussion of “Intelligent Robotics and Automation in a Cloud-Connected World”.  He gave numerous examples of significant advances in humanoid robots with machine vision guidance performing human-like tasks in a complex environment.  To be sure, the capabilities were not “C3PO-like”, but the demonstrations were, I think, well beyond what the casual observer – even in this group of automation professionals – might have expected.  Kuffner was recently lured away from his high-profile founding position with Google Robotics by Toyota, as reported in Business Insider (read the full article here).
